Lark Hall Infant and Nursery Academy and Flax Hill Junior Academy are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its pupils and families.  Our ethos is to always keep the child in focus as they are our priority.

It is everyone’s responsibility to safeguard children – Protecting them from maltreatment; preventing impairment of their health and development; ensuring they grow up in safe and effective circumstances; and to ensure they have the best life chances.

Having a Family Support Worker within our Academy, has been valuable and a great support to our pupils and families.  Angie has a wide range of knowledge and information of resources, support agencies to refer to such as Malachi and the Early Help Team (i.e. parenting and behaviour support), offering nurture support to our pupils (we have a lunch time nurture club and undertake a Well-4-U Nurturing Programme for all of our Year 3s to help with transition, friendships and life skills, and she can also help with other difficulties families find themselves in such as finance / debt, housing, employment, as well as offering a listening ear to look at solving issues and concerns families may have.

Angie’s input and support as well as our school staff, was hugely recognised with Ofsted (November 2016) where it was reported that: ‘Safeguarding is effective. There is nowhere in or around school that I don’t feel safe,’ and ‘If we are worried about anything we can always find someone to talk to. We can always go to the worry lady (this is what our pupils call our Family Support Worker) or put something in the worry box,’ are typical examples of pupils’ responses when asked about safety in school. Parents overwhelmingly agree that their children are well cared for and feel safe in school. You have a professional and effective team of people who work together to ensure that all safeguarding arrangements are well understood by staff. Staff training is regular. Staff are aware of the latest safeguarding guidance. There are weekly updates and daily informal discussions. Communication systems between the staff and the family support worker are robust. Record-keeping is detailed and of high quality. Governors and staff have received training on the dangers of radicalisation and extremism. They say that this is part of the culture of safeguarding in the school. As one lunchtime supervisor commented, ‘Safeguarding the children is everyone’s job. It’s always at the top of our list.’

Safeguarding is not just about keeping our pupils and families safe and protected, but also we ensure other practices are robust and are in place, such as Online Safety (any type of abuse that occurs on the internet, facilitated through technology such as computers, tablets and mobile phones), Contextual Safeguarding (recognition that children and young people are vulnerable in some social settings, the community and with different relationships formed which can feature violence and abuse), County Lines (Police term for urban gangs supplying drugs to suburban areas, involving child exploitation) and Prevent (which is part of the Governments Counter Terrorism Strategy and aims to stop people being drawn into terrorism.  Prevent is everyone’s business.  Young people are being recruited into such groups which promote hatred, discrimination and sometimes violence).

The Academy has a clear Safeguarding Policy which explains safeguarding, our roles and responsibilities, and other expectations required.  We also follow Keeping Children Safe in Education (September 2019) whereby all staff adhere to this statutory guidance.  All staff are fully trained in Level 1 Safeguarding which gives them understanding and the ability to safeguard our pupils.  The Safeguarding Team above are fully trained in Level 1, 2 and 4 due to their roles of leading the schools safeguarding expectations.

Our Safeguarding Team and staff are very passionate in ensuring that our pupils needs are met, their wellbeing is provided for, and more importantly that they are safe and protected in school, at home and in the community.
